Proposal – Magical Beauty
A Portrait is a photograph of a persons face. Portraits are how we and others identify ourselves; what we look like. However Portrait Photography has vastly expanded as photography and technology has grown. Portraits are now used for many more reasons; family albums, selfies, advertisements, profile pictures ect. I am going to be focusing on the aspect of advertising portraits, the Commercial aspect of Portrait Photography.
I will produce a series of conceptualised photographs which will allow me to explore commercial photography; High Fashion Make-up advertising. I will be photographing portraits in order to advertise make-up which will show that it is a magical beauty which everyone can share and achieve as i believe make-up can transform you in to whatever you want to be. This will be achieved by creating a mystical scene whereby a character will represent the beauty and magic within the product I will be advertising. This will mean creating a more extravagant look with the product than what is seen on an everyday basis, it will be out of the ordinary.
In order to create this concept I will be in need of props to make my scene. This will require me to contact/visit different companies. I will need fabric to create my background backdrop. Make-up available in different colours. Extra key detail props which will add to the whole entire screen which I will go out and collect and buy from different shops and the woods; leafs and twigs. A reliable model which I will have to keep in contact with. Achievable lighting. In order to achieve all of this I will need a thorough scene and shoot plan. This will allow me to set up all the key elements of my scene, then my model, then the lighting in order to achieve my shots.
My pre-production body of work has to be thoroughly planned and thought through. I will have to have hold of all props needed to create my scenes and have regular contact with my model in order to make sure she is available when she is needed over the next 16 weeks. Each week I will provide a new set of images which are building up to the whole scene I want to create. This will be of either the model or of the work behinds the scene. This will include either make-up colours/ hair styles/ poses/ lighting affects/ making the back drop/ props. This will provide a detailed account of the planning and work behind the context of my final series of images. I will keep receipts of my orders in order to show planning and development within my shoots.
I have being inspired for these pieces of work by such photographers as Annie Leibovitz, David LaChapelle and Kirsty Mitchell and Iain Crawford. Therefore I will be researching the concepts behind their work and how they have achieved their photographs in order for me to portray my own ideas. I have chosen each photographer for their own individual reasons however my biggest inspiration is Kirsty Mitchell. Kirsty creates her whole image/set. She creates a mystic wonderland whereby a magical story is portrayed within every image. The surreal looks of the characters bring the images to life and express the story she is trying to present. She also presents a colour theme throughout her images which overwhelm the image in an artistic manner which gives the image real depth and life.
I will also be researching High Fashion Make-up campaigns to see the styles used for published campaigns so that I can explore the techniques throughout my work. I will also have to look into how to do certain hair styles upon my model in order to create the mythical theme. As well as this I will be looking in to the techniques used within high fashion make-up photography;for example boarders around the frame of the image in order for text, this is a key element I need to research and produce within my work. Lighting techniques, angle of model and photographer.
In order to achieve these photographs I will be shooting using Digital RAW files in order for post-production purposes. The main aim of my images are to advertise make-up products therefore I will be shooting in colour. I will be using a home made studio, ambient light and flash to portray the warm, soft, magical feel of the image.
As the aim of my photographs are for advertising purposes. My audience is going to be within the Commercial industry. Therefore the company I am advertising for. Which will mean I have to capture there audience which will be between the ages of 13+, mainly women and all women as I believe make-up can be used to transform anyone in to what they want to be or look like. Therefore the photos will be used in all matters of advertising, the companies website and promotional aspects such as posters, billboards, magazines, and social media ect.
