Proposal draft 4 (all drafts in research folder)
Why do people wear the clothes they wear?
Is how we dress influenced by our profession?
Does the lifestyle of an individual influence their fashion choices?
Does the age/gender/culture of an individual impact their fashion choices?
Is fashion important to people?
Within my project I aim to explore the alliance between people and fashion. I will do this by looking closely at whether what people wear professionally is influenced by their lifestyle.
I am aiming to capture a series of images which explore the range of clothing/uniform which people wear professionally. I will be working with people of different ages/cultures/genders who work in different professional roles. I will be working closely with these people in order to answer questions such as; Why do people wear the clothes they wear? Is how we dress influenced by our profession? Does the lifestyle of an individual influence their fashion choices? Does the age/gender/culture of an individual impact their fashion choices? Is fashion important to people?
My research will consist of creating and handing out a questionnaire in order to find potential subjects and also to begin getting to know a little about them in order to start photographing. I will begin testing ideas upon myself and how I represent myself professionally.
I will be examining objective photography. I will start by looking at a series of images which closely look at different types and classes of people in a town – People of the Twentieth Century – 1920’s by August Sander. I will be looking closely at how he has represented these people, how he has defined them professionally and the composition of his portraits. I will also look at how Thomas Ruff has composed and directed his portrait serious and what he wanted to represent through this. In conjunction I will be looking into lifestyle product photography in order to photograph the clothing/uniform of someone’s profession separately.
I will photograph both on location and within the studio. I will photograph the subjects on location within their work place or a place situated with their profession. I will photograph their clothing/uniform within the studio to identify their fashion influence.
I aim for this work to be self-published or published within a lifestyle magazine in order to represent to the readers and industry that fashion is a huge part of how people identify with themselves and one another. However I would also like the work to be in a gallery or exhibition in order for people to look up close and personal at the images to see how we all unconsciously judge people on their professional lifestyles.
