Specialist Techniques and Process 3 – Comparing photography kit development

Comparing Phase 1 vs Toyo 4/5 camera vs Cannon 5D Mark II vs Nikon D7100 vd Nikon D3200

Phase One – Nice square image, gives the portrait a different twist. Sharp and clear which gives full, flattering detail to face. Background has a strong cyan tone, reflecting a magenta tone upon face. However was shot on Flash WB – this can be altered within Photoshop. Strong highlights upon face with contrast of dark shadows, blacks are blacks creating a strong, flattering portrait. Basic camera set up with simple to use settings, overall image is sharp and striking.

Cannon 5D Mark II –  Over exposed on skin, strong magenta influence over image. Sharpness and clear of image is flattering. Slight cyan influence in background also. Images look cold however this can be altered in Photoshop. Overall finish of image excluding white balance issues is flattering on subject, blacks are dark, shadows and highlights frame face nicely.

Nikon D7100 – Warmer image than the Cannon and Phase One with a yellow overcast. Lifts image as presents more life like representation. Soft shadows, blacks are grey however strong highlights. Sharpness on eyes is strong however not as sharp on rest of face in comparison.

Nikon D3200 – Colour cast is good however overall sharpness of image is slightly blurry. This could be due to quality of camera and lens in comparison to the other kits used. Blacks are dark however the highlights are to strong and shadows are weak.  Lighter and smaller to use than other kit in comparison however i feel they create more striking images.
