OUTCOME 1

Draft 9
26-01-16

Issues

  • What are the expectations/requirements to been a model? (descriptor of how to look)
  • How much does body image affect people of a young age?
  • Does who, what and how something is represented within advertisements affect its success?
  • Can everyday/normal people who are represented in the same way as models make successful advertisements?
  • Does the target audience of fashion advertisements prefer real life models or the fashion industry models?

My main interests are portraiture and fashion photography. I enjoy working on creative concepts as well as collaborating to create fashion shots. Most of my work explores the alliance between people and fashion, usually examining issues with  identity, false representations and stereotypes.

Intro – Fashion advertisements; how and what they are representing cause many controversial opinions on false representations and unattainable standards for the audience to achieve within the 21st century through media and print. In my opinion, how models are represented within fashion advertisements is a false representation of everyday, real people and causes the current generation surrounded by these images on billboards, magazine covers, social media and upon television to be judged on not looking like the unattainable standards set by the fashion industry.

Within this project I am going to be exploring whether every day, normal people can replace models within advertisements and still make successful selling points. By collaborating within the industry and re-creating fashion ads using people of different age, gender and size. I will do this by focusing on certain issues in order to create a series of images which could potentially change the fashion industry standards. The issues I will exploring are;

  • What are the expectations/requirements to been a model? (descriptor of how to look)
  • How much does body image affect people?
  • Does who, what and how something is represented within advertisements affect its success?
  • Can everyday/normal people who are represented in the same way as models make successful advertisements?
  • Does the target audience of fashion advertisements prefer real life models or the fashion industry models?

I will be researching in to different aspects of creating successful fashion advertisements,

composition, creations and subject matter within the ads. Lighting, location/studio – software used within industry at the moment, what post processing is done, should I re-capture that or try with and without

Similar works – companies/agencies who stick to unachievable standards and those who do the opposite – CNA – using ordinary people for fashion show – anyone using plus sized or everyday people within fashion industry –  France new post-processing law

Questionnaire – discovering what people class as a model, whether they believe they can be a model, what they think of fashion advertisements

Using ads as inspirations to re-create – IMAGES –how they are and where they are displayed

Photographers and their lighting techniques – terry Richardson, joel grimes (other famous fashion photographers)

Current trends – focusing on new trends but re-creating old ads – 3 point lighting out whats in? or what do I prefer? What are the catalogues doing –how are they posing people and making them up – how do they look

Collaborating with make-up artists

All whilst investigating the issues

Developed from last semester – less about identity and stereotypes more about false representation

What format/kit they use to shoot

How does all this research show/prove what my work is about???

My aim is to create a series of images which
use current trend lighting, collaborations with muas
shoot using phase one? Capture one? Photoshop? DSLR?

  • exhibition – potential gallery exhibition of the images to show a change in the way fashion photography could develop
  • within a fashion magazine
  • make my own fashion magazine/book of the images
  • to reach the fashion industry/ everyday people to show that fashion is attainable
